IMHO, CCP did a pretty good job at story telling. Most characters are "humanised".
Take Tibus Heth for example, he is ruthless at times but he is not a bad guy in general, he is patriotic to the extend of fanatical at times but he does have his own sense of honour and DOES appear to care for the lower "castes" in Caldari society. After reading the novel (Empyrean Age) and various chronicles, I find myself unable to hate him or love him. He is just exhibiting human traits, a poor man doing what he thinks is right. Compared to characters like Ostro Gariushi who had a more "colourful" background, I find Tibus Heth a more interesting character as it makes me think "would I do it any differently IF I was in Heth's shoes?". As a side note, even Gariushi exhibited his ruthlessness when dealing with Crielere lab (makes him appears like a villian and yet he is a hero to Ishukone and Caldari).
Same goes with President Foiritan. A capable peace time leader and a good politician, he should not be blamed for the fall of Caldari Prime but he was (again, placed myself in his shoes and asked if I could have done any better to prevent the invasion). Foiritan appears to be less ruthless and more humane than Heth but it is difficult to see where he actually get his hands dirty for the Gallentean people, much like what most politicians in real life did (at least Heth still queue up for his body check up... until he found that he's infected with a terminal illness that is).
Both are two different people with two different backgrounds and CCP's writers did successfully build up their characters logically. As a Caldari, I would not see Heth as a villian (but as a Gallente I might). Nor would I totally hate or blame Foiritan, he is still a hero of some sort but I might not want him as a leader with Gallente at its current state (Gallente did lose systems under his watch after all).
Now on to more recent "stories", the loss and reclamation of Intaki is quite an interesting turn of event. I don't find it to be unfair to the FDUs, instead I find it quite refreshing for the FDUs. Say, if the FDU never lost the system in the first place, Intaki would have a tougher time seeking autonomy. However, since they lost the system, it gives Intaki the chance to seek autonomy and entrench themselves with the help of mercenaries. With FDU's reclamation of Intaki, it is an extremely good opportunity for the Intakis to announce to the universe that they wish to be autonomous and probaby independant from Gallente Federation.
Of course, there might be things happening behind the scene as in Foiritan (ousted by political power in Gallente) MIGHT seek an alliance with Mila Strevanos/Kinachi Hepimeki (Ostro's sister, with the death of Ostro) to regain some order of power for the peace seeking factions within Gallente Federation & Caldari State. Perhaps with this split, both FDU and State Protectorate pilots should think whether they will support this peace seeking faction or they would choose to disregard the Intakis' wish. FDU pilots may choose to attack Ishukone & Mordu Legion ships if they feel strongly against Intaki or respect the Intaki's request.
Much like real world, I find that we do have a choice but a lot of our choices were governed by circumstances and creates a different scenario that defines the next circumstance, which, in this case involves FDU winning the system and thus forcing the Intaki's to play their independant "card" (else they would pretend that they didn't have a choice anyway) that in turn creates the current circumstance - to respect or not to respect Intakis' request of not attacking Ishukone/Mordu vessels. I am sure if a bunch of FDU pilots decides to disregard the security penalty and attack Mordu/Ishukone vessels (don't forget to inform CCP) for few days, you'll make it to the news (if that is what you want).
